There's a lot of BIG stuff in our @airandspacemuseum, but some history comes in a small package.
Science writer Maia Weinstock designed this prototype for the popular "Women of NASA" Lego set. Weinstock wanted to represent a range of experiences of women and people of color in STEM, and hoped to spark interest among girls in pursuing careers with NASA.
The prototype set features:
◾️Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, who led software development for the Apollo missions to the Moon and whose work with code formed the foundation of software engineering
◾️Mathematician Katherine Johnson, whose key calculations helped ensure the success of numerous NASA programs including the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo projects (she declined for her likeness to be a part of the manufactured kit)
◾️Astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space and the first known LGBTQ astronaut, as well as an advocate for STEM education
◾️Astronomy expert Nancy Grace Roman, who was nicknamed the “Mother of Hubble" and worked as NASA’s first female executive
◾️Astronaut Mae Jemison, an engineer, doctor, Peace Corps officer, teacher and the first African American woman in space
