The Swiss architect Peter Zumthor is an iconoclast known for his emotional, intuitive designs. He draws on the sensory memories of a mid-century European boyhood—the hexagonal tiles in his aunt’s kitchen, the way light fell on the forest floor—and many of his buildings have become destinations for international architecture buffs. For the past 14 years, he has been working on remaking Los Angeles’ most important museum, LACMA, with a new building costing some $650 million. Will the project be a masterpiece that establishes him among the major architects of his generation? Or will it be a fiasco?
