In October of last year, a couple of hundred Chilean high-school students staged a walkout to protest a modest price hike for the Santiago metro. The events that followed came to be known as el estallido—“the explosion.” Hundreds and then thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city’s Plaza Italia and more or less held it for the next several months, despite the declaration of a state of emergency and a curfew, and despite nightly battles with police, who used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets in increasingly violent attempts to disperse them. For those on the left, el estallido represented a unique and unexpected opportunity to pursue demands that had been previously unthinkable—including the demand for a new constitution.
