Housed in the oldest space in the Museum – originally designed for King George III's library – the Enlightenment gallery explores the how Europeans and Americans viewed the world in the 18th century during an era of new knowledge, scientific discovery, colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade.

At its centre is the Piranesi Vase – one of the highlights of our new one-way route around the Ground floor galleries. Measuring 2.7m high, the vase was constructed in the 1700s from a mixture of classical fragments and modern additions.

It belonged to the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and was crafted by the artist from ancient fragments reportedly found at the Pantanello – a site on the grounds of the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian at Tivoli, near Rome.
