I went to sleep with the sore of discovery and woke up feeling a grumbly curmudgeon. In search of panacea I stepped outside early when the morning sky was a dusky pastel and heard the songs of birds and a crow cawing. Gratitude welled, grumpiness muted for a moment. Except that nature isn’t meant to be a mere magic spell and sometimes the best magic is the honest kind, the working kind, the ultimately freeing. Sips of warm drink and the mist bringing me back to this tangle, this itch of revelations. Coattails, crafters, facsimile, homage. Wheat or chaff. I’m in my pantry now. Bags of flour. One has weevils. If I let it stay, the others get the larvae. A disappointing discovery, an irk of the soul. Letting go purifies and cleanses; letting go is sore and confounding. Duality, a part of life. I don’t want a bandaid, a pacifier, a magic spell. The magic is the sitting and sifting, clearing and cleaning, the letting go and making room. Growth, gratitude, freedom, possibility. The exchange rate unmatched, the labor the process, and the prize a rebirth into a new chapter to explore, stumble, bloom, grow, and shed until another new chapter. My drink is still warm, I’m outside again, covered in flour dust, the crow is back, my curmudgeon smiling, dualities afoot, all of it the magic.

I put to rest the last pages of a journal and am finally commencing this venerated of tomes that I’ve set aside for too long as the pages will get filled swiftly. I already don’t want it to end. But it’s time to make stories and messes with this most exceptional relic made by a favorite modern day pioneer of binders @pegandawl, originally The Black Spot Books. I have a story of how I first discovered their splendid curiousities, it’s connected with the gravity of names, specifically my son’s, but later, a rambling to come.

A new page harkens for a pen set apart, and here I hold another favorite in modern day pioneers of writing instruments, a @franklinchristoph Model 65 Fountain Pen. Ever tried & true, weathering so many seasons of life, yet penning a new book & chapter ahead. These are when treasures are not mere items but faithful companions and for such I am extremely grateful.
