#GagosianOnline: Whether through splitting, redoubling, rearranging, and inverting the figure, the four artists featured in the third cycle of Gagosian Online use divergent stylistic approaches to reconceive the human body.

Combining a classical portrait composition with curving arabesques that suggest a dissolution of form into the surrounding ether, Glenn Brown presents a mysterious, Januslike two-faced figure that looks out in opposing directions, suggesting an internally divided subject. Giuseppe Penone celebrates the relationship between the human and natural worlds—his domain of research for over fifty years—by creating two freestanding figurative sculptures whose bodies are composed of leaves and branches cast directly from nature.

Working off a lesser-known photograph from 1950 of a twenty-four-year-old Marilyn Monroe rediscovered in Life magazine’s archive, Urs Fischer reproduces, digitally manipulates, and then recombines multiple copies of the screen icon’s portrait to create a composite image that alludes to the fractured nature of identity. Extending his recurring motif of upside-down figures to a vibrant composition composed of expressively individualized marks in shades of cerulean blue, warm rose, and orchid, Georg Baselitz mines the viewer’s familiarity with the human form to complicate notions of subjectivity in figurative imagery.
