In contrast to more speculative projections of impending realities, artists such as Chris Burden and Tom Friedman look back to specific historical moments that radically and abruptly transformed assumptions about our society, as well as the futures we collectively imagined for ourselves. Other artists, including Derrick Adams and Kon Trubkovich, allude to broadcast television’s unidirectional power and control over audiences throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, which complicated issues of visibility and cultural memory.  Both Austin Lee and Cindy Sherman depict figures that suggest bygone models of representation: Lee’s pictorial approach to his subject is reminiscent of Claymation renderings, despite his technologically advanced working processes, while Sherman stages an inflatable doll as a human proxy, set amid a sea of consumer detritus that acts as a physical register of past use.
