Albert Oehlen uses abstraction strategically as a means to complicate the genre’s typical associations with artistic subjectivity, sophistication, and purity of form. Sterling Ruby evokes imagery of a window with an ambiguous vantage point, drawing into question whether we are looking out onto an explosive, electric world or into the personal projections of the mind. Katharina Grosse’s distinctive painting process—in which she layers a sequence of sprayed colors upon a surface—creates a synchronous temporality that uniquely distorts perceptions of time by allowing these records of different moments to coexist on a single plane. Interpreting traditions of landscape painting through the lens of abstraction, Helen Frankenthaler prominently includes a thick band reminiscent of a horizon line in her panoramic canvas. Through a profusion of densely built-up areas of paint that cover her canvas from edge to edge, Cecily Brown calls upon the viewer to parse recognizable features or figurative references without providing clear pictorial resolution.
