A penny for your thoughts...

Humans aren’t really taught how to “not take things personally.” In fact, we’re taught to work hard and care a lot about the people and things in our life. So, when something threatens those things that we care about, we SHOULD be bothered.

I think the healthy difference is recognizing the WHY. When you force yourself to look at a situation from many different perspectives, you can usually find some clarity on the reason for the outcome. This is the tough part bc when you’re hurting, it’s difficult to justify why something didn’t work out…  The possible reason you lost your job or ended a relationship or any difficult change you’ve endured this year.

In Dr. P’s words, “I’d like to invite you to consider…” the possibility that some doors had to close in order for others to open. (Insert all the other cliché sayings here 🙄.)

So, if the sayings aren't resonating with you yet, stop focusing on how to NOT take things too personally, and ask yourself 3 questions...

1. How can I reframe this situation more positively?
2. How can I experience gratitude?
3. How can I be kind and generous?

According to the Dalai Lama, these are the 3 factors that seem to have the greatest influence on our happiness. While I do believe it's natural for humans to sometimes “take things personally,” we’re only hurting ourselves and our happiness. So, in order to escape the hurt, we must replace it with happiness.

So yes, not taking things personally is a skill… even the Dalai Lama has to replace negative thoughts with humility, kindness, and humor.

And idk about you, but I’m definitely not the Dali Lama yet, so it’s definitely a work in progress for me…

What about you?
