The snout of the false gavial is as impressive as it looks, playing a major role in this freshwater species’ ability to catch fish. Long and narrow in design, the snout creates little resistance, making it easy for the gavial to cut through the water in pursuit of fish, insects, crustaceans, and small mammals. While prey is usually smaller in size, this species has been known to snatch larger prey species as well, like macaque monkeys, wild pigs, and mouse deer.
