Photo by @daisygilardini / After a full week in northern British Columbia photographing grizzly bears, I finally started to see things creatively and appreciate the full photo potential. It’s important to go back to the same location over and over to really understand a place—the movement of light during the day and the subjects’ habits. The magic light in this particular location, due to the topography of the valley, lasted only an hour or so. With one side of the river lit by low, warm, late afternoon light and the other side in the shade, I took advantage of that split second when the bear stood up in the water on its hind legs to look for salmon, capturing the ring created by the backlight.
In order not to "burn out" my highlight, I underexposed this image one stop. In postproduction I converted the image to black and white and added a bit of contrast.
