Wine lost the national election to Yoweri Museveni, a 76-year-old who has run Uganda for 35 years. It took some time to catch up with Bobi Wine in Kampala a few years ago. When we finally got together Wine explained Museveni wanted to emulate China by getting as many “boots on the ground” as possible before investing in any infrastructure for them. He directed me to a hospital where women were giving birth on the hallway floors and a village that was making small rocks out of big rocks by burning tires around them and eventually supplying gravel for roads. Another quote from todays NY Times: Mr. Wine was arrested three times, along with at least 600 supporters at his rallies. His bodyguard was murdered, his lawyer was detained, and journalists who covered him had their accreditation revoked.
