He died surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him. From the moment, almost twelve years ago, when I first heard about the bold plan to airlift four of the last Northern White Rhinos from @safariparkdvurkarlove zoo in the Czech Republic back to Africa, until today, when Najin and Fatu are the last two remaining of their kind, this story has shaped the lives of countless dedicated keepers, scientists & conservationists. I was deeply moved to learn that the image of @wachira.joseph saying goodbye to Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet at @olpejeta Conservancy, has been honored in the prestigious @natural_history_museum's People's Choice Award in Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition (@nhm_wpy) as well as in @natgeo's 21 Most Compelling Images of the 21st Century. I hope that these recognitions draw much needed attention not only to the crisis of extinction but also to the important work being done by people like Jojo and his colleagues at @olpejeta. Watching a creature die, one who is the last of its kind, felt like watching our own demise. This giant hulking creature had survived as a species for millions of years but could not survive us, mankind. I hope that this heartbreaking moment can be a catalyst to awaken humanity to the reality of the losses we face and inspire action. In a hopeful twist, scientists from the @biorescue_project have already created 5 northern white rhino embryos which are awaiting implantation in a southern white rhino surrogate.
