Ten years later I'm a ‘passable’ dancer and in the process I made lasting friendships and met some inspiring teachers and musicians. I got connected to a global community of people dancing to swing music -something I never imagined when I shyly opened the door to my first dance lesson. But then the activity that had lifted my spirits (and some days kept my head together) stopped abruptly. The global pandemic meant all partnered social dancing was effectively banned. Since March last year the teachers and musicians I got to know have been scraping by, performing digital lessons and concerts to solo dancers in their living rooms and kitchens. These 4 pictures are a memory of happier times and a tribute to the dancing community that welcomed me. I'm looking forward to an explosion of culture after a long period of enforced restriction.
