Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / Researchers at Entocycle in London are developing technologies to farm insects for industrial-scale protein production as a more sustainable alternative to meat.

This breeding chamber is buzzing with black soldier flies. They're grown on brewery and coffee waste, helping to reduce the amount of organic trash. The land and water required to farm insects is just a fraction of what's needed for poultry or cattle, with fewer greenhouse emissions. Food waste is part of my latest cover story for National Geographic magazine on "The End of Trash," in the March issue.

The "circular economy" is surfacing as a promising solution to waste, pollution, and emissions. By designing waste out of the production system, circularity aims to keep resources and materials in use while regenerating natural systems. The truth is there isn't one single solution, yet each one of us can make a big difference through being more aware of the impact of our decisions and staying informed.
