Brown went on to work for the Works Progress Administration in Philadelphia as both a painter and printmaker and gained international prominence when his paintings appeared in the 1936 group show “New Horizons in American Art” at @museumofmodernart.  In this self-portrait, we are greeted by a deceptively complex composition that improbably presents the artist from both profile and three-quarter views. While we look at him from these dual perspectives, the artist studies himself in the mirror, as his reflection, likewise, studies us.
