GREAT news! For the first time since the start of the pandemic, we are finally able to once again release orangutans who have completed the rehabilitation process at our Orangutan Care Centre & Quarantine (OCCQ) back to the wild! At the end of March 2022, OFI’s field team collaborated with the Indonesian Forestry agency (BKSDA) and National Park (BTNTP) officials to release 5 wild born ex-captive orangutans who had undergone rehabilitation at the OCCQ. This first video shows adult female orangutan Enon and her juvenile son Ernie emerging from their transport cage. OFI had previously rehabilitated and released Enon years ago and she gave birth to Ernie in the wild. But when infant Ernie was seen with a machete wound inflicted by unknown persons, we brought the pair back to the OCCQ so Ernie could receive life-saving treatment. Now fully recovered, we are so glad that Ernie and his Mum are back in the great forest! OFI rangers will follow them at a distance for at least 10 days to make sure they are doing well in the wild.

Enon and Ernie’s story highlights the importance of vigilant forest patrol programs. Simply releasing orangutans back to the wild is not a solution in and of itself if forests continue to disappear and orangutans are not protected from those who would harm them. OFI and National Park rangers have increased patrol frequency to ensure bad actors stay out of the forests we protect. We also work to educate people in the communities, plantations, etc. neighboring these forests on orangutans’ protected status and what to do if they come across orangutans. And of course, we work to acquire and reforest all the land we can so individuals like Enon, Ernie, and their future descendants will always have a home.
