No matter how much beauty and treasure a day holds, there are also learning curves, grit and the ongoing juggle, so it’s nice to have these spaces of play. I’ve been thinking about my mom’s pre-retirement years and all the varying terrain that she so gracefully walked through, especially as a Korean woman carving her own path here. She is one who seems to surpass the odds, but it hasn’t just been a stroke of luck. So much of it is the unnoticed qualities of her character and choices weighed from her heart. I remember watching others undermine her capabilities and the integrity of her character repeatedly, and what stood out more than the ire I felt from the constancy of witnessing such was her absolute contrast of response. There was one instance where a friend and colleague of hers turned on her when this person could no longer benefit from her and went on a tear to try to break her spirit with gossip, passive & direct aggressiveness, and all the usual nonsense of immature human behaviors. It did impact. It did cause others to distance from my mom, it caused her hurt as was intended, and it caused unnecessary drama beyond her control. Having integrity of character and heart did not numb her from experiencing pain. She never defended herself, nor did she respond in the same manner, but she held out to a belief that sowing goodness in the face of opposition is never a waste and that it can change an entire ripple effect. Some months later after HR quietly investigated the situation, my mom was apologized to by the head of her company and told that they were looking to terminate the employment of the person who caused all this trouble. Instead of feeling pleased, my mom’s heart sank and she pleaded with them to give that person another chance with some coaching because a job is not just a job but a livelihood and doesn’t everyone need that? That always stuck with me. When we suffer it’s easy to take solace in our opponent suffering too, but to desire goodness for that person instead is what changes paradigms. A reminder that the goodness you give and choose even if it’s unseen is never wasted. 💓」2月20日 8時11分
