Today its warmth drifted me into the memory of summer days in Korea during my childhood. I can still remember the smell from the balcony and the cacophony of sounds that somehow soothed my being. I was home, perhaps more so than anywhere else. I loved sitting on floor cushions at the lowered table as we enjoyed my emo’s cooking. The intimacy of three generations laughing, sharing, and savoring sustenance together is lasting and doesn’t lose its flavor. I remember noticing how my mom was more herself there, where I saw frequented glimpses of her expressions unfettered beyond the roles that while she moved so gracefully and fluent in, were still not the sum total of her being. I loved being able to see such glimpses beyond, among my very favorite. Yonsei barks at a passerby and I’m instantly brought back to this home, my most cherished. The boy is thinking out loud in the other room and I smile. As much as I love my quiet expanses, what is a home without a sweet cacophony of sound?
