Followers of the native Shinto religion believe that spirits inhabit all living things. Once a tree reaches 100 years of age, a kodama, or spirit, makes its home there, and imbues the tree with its own personality. In Hokkaido it is not uncommon to find buses with hundreds of tourists admiring a single well-shaped or well-placed tree standing alone in a distant landscape.
