The male birds gather in the spring, assembling in leks, or courting arenas, where they display to females by fanning their tails and inflating their two olive-colored neck pouches that sit inside their impressive ruff. The sound accompanying their bizarre performance is a mix of gentle booming and popping noises, which, at daybreak in the cold of the high desert, makes for an eerie experience.
