Photos by @lisettepoole | Documenting life in Cuba, my mother’s homeland, has always been special for me. I grew up in a house in California full of exiled hearts, where there was a feeling of something missing. My family members existed in the context of home as a faraway thing—where a version of themselves lived on an island in the Caribbean and spoke another language, a version who cursed more, who knew everyone and laughed easily at jokes that required no translation. It was another dimension of life where they were at ease, quite like lying in the arms of a lover who simply understood them. It's where people pronounced their names correctly. And the music was so much better.

Life hit different in San Francisco but it became a kind of home too. Ease settled in, and there was family. Yet the sense that something wasn’t right remained. And it was passed on to me, too observant and nostalgic for my own good. When I went to Cuba to photograph, that sentiment found its way into the images I made—a look of longing in people’s eyes, perhaps longing for a life beyond the sea not yet lived.

Lately I’ve been thinking about Cuba, where I spent five years and moved away just before the pandemic. (These photos are from 2018.) I’d like to go back to continue the next chapter of what I consider my life’s work. There was an unpredictability to living and working on the island that gave me life. I want that back. I learned something about the world and myself there—it's lacking when I’m gone. Now that "something missing" feeling greets me in the morning. For more from Cuba, follow @lisettepoole.
