What happens when you combine lava and snow? A gorgeous image from the @国際宇宙ステーション.
An astronaut snapped this picture over Hawaii of the snowcapped volcanos Mauna Kea and recently erupted Mauna Loa after a snowstorm covered the peaks. The image was taken last December after Mauna Loa’s nearly month-long eruption through November and December.
It’s not an uncommon sight, however. Winter brings Hawaii’s heaviest precipitation season, and these peaks both exceed 13,000 feet, so they’re no strangers to the snow.
Image Description:
An aerial image of a green, nearly oval island, with a thick arm of the land jutting out to the left. Two volcanoes are close to the center of the island and can be made out by the contrasting white snow that covers the top of them. The rest of the island is varying shades of green, and the backdrop is a dark blue ocean. Clouds cover most of the top of the image and some of the bottom half of the island.
