While Cindy Phenix was getting her master’s degree at Northwestern University, she took a seminar on Picasso where she studied analytical cubism, discovering the beauty of fragmented, layered pieces. This is the same form that has partially inspired her own style. She calls these fragmented pieces within art “monsters,” and in her own work, has taken this concept and explores the idea of said monsters not knowing their own power due to being stuck inside–so, Phenix takes them outside. “These characters that were fragmented, composed of different objects, become these types of monsters. Even with the fragmentation, you can always see a corset, or a newspaper, or an armchair,” she says, denoting the idea that there is still a controlled, private space. “My collage became more intense, I started painting more landscapes, bringing the monster figures outside.” Read the full feature on flaunt.com!
