In 2015 in Kenya, an abandoned southern white rhino calf named Ringo became the beloved charge of Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s dedicated keepers. (In the first photo, you can see Ringo with Joseph Wachira.) Ringo was introduced into the same enclosure as Sudan, the last adult male northern white rhino at the conservancy. His youthful energy rubbed off on the elder rhino, but tragically Ringo died an early death in 2016, leaving Sudan without a best friend and the caretakers heartbroken. Heartbreak is an unfortunate part of wildlife rescue, something that seems to only deepen the dedication and determination of those on the front lines. I have just launched the new short film “Remembering Sudan,” which documents the incredible bonds between the Ol Pejeta’s head caregiver, Zacharia Mutai, and all the keepers who sacrifice so much to protect these precious creatures.
