My birth mother was a complicated soul — not wholly equipped to handle motherhood. I have so much more insight into her inner turmoil and her daily struggles now that I’m an adult, and boy, do I appreciate her sacrifices. I remember her gorgeous butt-long brown locks that wrapped around me when she hugged me, the divine smell of L’Air du Temps on her, her melodic cackle that brightened the room, and her quirky, delightful sense of humor. My Godmother taught me unconditional love, what it takes to build a career, and how to live, not merely survive. I miss her grasping my hand, us singing show tunes together, the smell of hair spray mixed with orange blossoms when I hugged her, and her contagious giggle. God, I miss them both.
