While some insects call attention to themselves, others like the buck moth caterpillar would prefer to go unnoticed. For them, blending in is the most successful survival strategy. To do this, many insects have evolved to mimic their habitat so closely that they become virtually invisible. Our caterpillar friend is a perfect example of this strategy. Mottled brown like the twigs of the trees it feeds on, this species’ primarily relies on camouflage for protection, but its spines can inflict a painful sting if blending in fails to do the trick.
