In a colony of honeypot ants, individuals like this one, known as “repletes”, act as living food pantries or refrigerators, stashing food for the entire colony. As worker ants bring them plant nectar and juices from insect prey, their abdomens swell with sugary liquid, sometimes growing to the same size as a small grape! Filled with nutrients, these ants remain on standby until food becomes scarce, at which point they will regurgitate their stored food in order to feed the hungry colony. Photo taken @abqbiopark.
