Some of the first park rangers in America weren’t rangers at all. They were Buffalo Soldiers - Black Americans who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War. On Buffalo Soldiers Day, we celebrate the legacy of these first-of-a-kind, trailblazing rangers.

These dedicated men protected wildlife from poachers, built trails and forged a proud legacy in our nation’s history. They made these accomplishments despite the racism and prejudice that they faced.
