I recently visited Fort Worth, Texas, and my first stop was the Fort Worth Stockyards, the historic heart of the city and home to one of the most unique traditions I have ever witnessed. Twice a day, drovers on horseback herd longhorn cattle along East Exchange Avenue as crowds look on from the sidewalks. I’ve never seen steers with such big, beautiful horns, and I was thrilled to meet, photograph, and even pet a few before the morning drive. Afterward, I walked over to M.L. Leddy’s, a famous Western-wear shop. I couldn’t resist getting a gorgeous, hand-shaped straw hat and photographed one of their craftsmen creating its shape with steam. And since I never miss the chance to experience the nightlife in a new city, after speaking with locals, I ended up at the historic White Elephant Saloon. It was exactly what I was hoping for. The saloon was packed with people dancing and meeting up for drinks. When I left, I met Ricky, a limo driver who was waiting for people to leave the saloon. We chatted, and he let me take his portrait, which is one of my favorites from the trip. The few days I spent in Fort Worth were full of history, culture, and exuberant nightlife.
