The wind buffered us hard, freezing my gloves solid and blowing away any desire to stop for the night. The decision was hard to accept but easy to make: we needed to keep descending into the night. ⁠ ⁠ The next 4.5 hours were spent downclimbing the upper NE face of Augustin and stumbling around the heavily crevassed icefall near the bottom. Thanks to Kurt’s keen sense of direction and aerial photos from the flight in, he was able to navigate us out of the labyrinth as efficiently as possible. ⁠ ⁠ Once we were out of harm's way (at about 1:30 am), we plopped down for a late dinner before the final slog back to our skis – and eventually base camp.
