I was on assignment in Mexico, my home country, with my partner, Paul Nicklen, to photograph the sacred cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula. Paul and I took a day to explore the famous ruins of the ancient Maya city before deciding to return after-hours with special permission from the nightly patrol. I wanted to create a photograph encompassing the celestial wisdom and deep spirituality that permeated Maya life in the 5th century. As we stood in the dark during the long exposures, it felt like we had been transported back to a time when jaguar gods and giant feathered serpents roamed the Earth. The resulting image made it to National Geographic's “100 Best Photos” of the century in a special issue. Of all the images the editors could have picked, I was so proud they chose one that shines a light on the extraordinary beauty and rich history of my homeland.
