Scotland is the latest country to announce the trial of a four day week, with a pilot programme for government workers starting at the end of this year. Advisors hope a successful trial for public sector workers could lead to the scheme being rolled out to private businesses. As we’ve reported over the last year, four-day work week trials have yielded overwhelmingly positive results for workers’ health and productivity, and the vast majority of companies in the biggest ever pilot study last year in the UK decided to stick with the reduced working hours. The bottom lines for these companies improved too, thanks to the boost in productivity and fewer people quitting their jobs. Of course, a shorter workweek can’t be applied across all industries—like in the health care sector, or for jobs that pay by time. Still, the results for industries that could feasibly introduce a four day week are looking pretty optimistic.
