Young people may be drinking less these days, but a new Gallup poll shows that people aged over 55 are drinking more now than they did 20 years ago.
The poll found that a record 40 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds don’t consume alcohol, compared to less than 30 percent in 2003. Meanwhile, more adults over 55 are drinking, with almost 60 percent reporting they enjoy a tipple, compared to just under 50 percent 20 years ago.
Researchers say the main reason for this decline in younger drinkers is because non-white people make up a bigger proportion of survey respondents than they did in previous decades, and non-white Americans have always been less likely to drink than white Americans. Other studies have pointed to young people switching over to weed instead of booze.
Either way: sobering news for all those music festivals that charge $15 for a beer.
