My regular place was closed so I ended up at Oslo, which happens to be right across the street from a police station. When the cops started gathering to honor the first responders, it took me a second to remember what day it was and realize what was happening. I felt all the people standing on line outside at the coffee shop do the same. We had accidentally become the audience at this ceremony. The cops were each handed a piece of paper with the name of a first responder who had died on 9/11. I assume they were all from this specific precinct. Most of the cops looked so young, I wondered how many were even old enough to remember that day. Then I looked at the people outside the shop and realized many of them probably were also too young to remember or weren’t living in the city 22 years ago. Such a weird thing to think about when for so long everyone in the city shared the same unspoken trauma. At 8:46am, there was 10 minutes of silence. Observed by every single person on that street. The coffee shop turned off their music. The garbage truck down the street stopped moving. Cyclists stopped and stood still. It’s amazing how NYC has the ability to be so quiet. Then the cops took turns reading the names on their pieces of paper. And when it was over, the music was turned back on and the people on line started talking again. That’s when I noticed an elderly woman who had been sitting on a bench at the shop, sipping coffee next to another woman who was about my age. “See you here next year,” she said, before they both got up and walked in opposite directions. So there were at the very least three of us. And for those two, it was no accident. Maybe they even knew one of the names on those slips of paper. 💔」9月12日 10時21分
