Video by @babaktafreshi | Colors of this aurora borealis crown from a few nights ago near Akureyri, Iceland, were incredible on footage, though my eyes picked up only subtle greens and purples.

The crown is the aurora borealis at its highest intensity, when the lights come from overhead and change every second in color and shape. A strong geomagnetic storm, originated by eruptions from the sun directed toward Earth, allowed for visibility in some U.S. central states on the 40th parallel north. In the polar regions, colors and hours-long activity have covered the skies. We expect more to continue through 2024 during the solar maximum—the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle.
