She first began posing at the age of 15 in 1924, and became so popular that she was often booked months in advance. This portrait by Meredith Frampton, dated 1928, shows Kelsey in a dress made by the artist's mother, Lady Frampton, with the artist also choosing the shoes. They are both classical and, being uncorseted, deliberately modern. The simple, short-sleeved pale tunic dress worn with low-heeled shoes and her straight hair were all essential elements of the fashionable boyish ‘garçonne style’ created by the couturiers Coco Chanel and Jean Patou from the mid-1920s.
