Through incredible objects, including the Vindolanda tablets – some of the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain, from the fort near Hadrian’s wall, we can gain insight into Roman military service in Britain. They reveal first-hand what daily life was like for soldiers, and the women, children and enslaved people who accompanied them, including the domestic arrangements and private lives of the commanders and their wives. Soldiers could enjoy private life outside military duties with their families, both official and unofficial.
