The smoke alarms that helped save Bettye and her family’s lives were installed just two months earlier by Red Cross volunteers Robert Jay Wortley and Mike Turner during a Sound the Alarm event. To Bettye’s surprise, they were also the volunteers who responded to the fire and provided immediate assistance to her and her family. “I didn't know what I was going to do that night,” she said. “But they came out, and they gave me a hug and told me it's going to be okay.” In the days following the fire, Robert and Mike continued to check on Bettye to ensure she had what she needed to navigate her recovery.
