テート・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (テート・ギャラリーInstagram)「🌙✨ In James Whistler's moonlit scenes, known as 'Nocturnes', the artist aimed to capture the beauty and tranquillity of the Thames by night. Anna Whistler, the artist's mother, described how her son painted the artworks after feeling struck by seeing the river 'in a glow of rare transparency an hour before sunset'. Whistler applied the paint quickly, wet on wet, producing a smooth, almost translucent, sheen to its surface. The paintings also reflect the influence Japanese woodblock prints had on the artist. This can be found by the relatively small range of colours used as well as the butterfly device in the lower half of the paintings, which Whistler used as his signature.
