Photo: @ivankphoto Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa recently announced that he has abandoned a plan to save untouched parts of the Yasuni National Park from oil extraction. This picture shows a road built by PetroAmazonas, Ecuador’s oil company. It was taken in early August of 2012 for National Geographic Magazine. The road, which the government called an “ecological trail”, had been built 12 miles into the Yasuni National Park in an area know as Block 31. Conservationists were concerned because it seemed as though the road would ultimately be used to extract oil from the ITT, an untouched section of the Yasuni Park. The construction of roads is extremely detrimental to the natural environment leading to over-hunting, deforestation and the deconstruction of local culture. Almost 50 percent of Ecuador's oil goes to the USA. #Yasuni, #Nature, #Oil, #Drilling, #Waorani, #Jungle, #Correa, #latergram, #Environment, @ナショナルジオグラフィック, @thephotosociety, @runa_photos
