Honeybees are nature’s mathematicians, and some very smart geometry goes into the shape of their hives. Those tightly packed hexagons each double as a honeypot and a home. They’re made from beeswax, which is hard for bees to make (it takes 8 ounces of honey to make 1 ounce of wax), so they have to be smart about space. The hexagon allows them to store the largest amount of honey with the least amount of wax. Pretty ingenious design. To learn more, watch the #TEDEd lesson at on.ted.com/hexagons
