This oil field was discovered just over 100 years ago in Belridge, California. Most of the vegetation was wiped out to install the machinery, leaving a massive landscape barren. Photographer and #TEDPrize winner Edward Burtynsky has spent years photographing how our use of oil affects the landscape. He traces the chain of the oil industry from extraction to consumption to waste. “My work is not about providing answers,” he says. “But it brings many questions to bear about what we’re doing to our landscape to provide for growing populations and cities.” See more photos of the oil industry’s impact on our planet at on.ted.com/oilfields
