A Great Blue Heron cranes his neck up to the sky from his perch atop a cluster of palmettos in the Viera Wetlands preserve, near Melbourne, FL. The wetlands are part of Florida's water treatment system, offering a unique habitat for many wildlife species. At dusk you will see and hear thousands of birds making their last rounds before full dark sets in and the place goes quiet--a rousing cacophony followed by an eerie silence. Don't dally too long after sunset, though. I got carried away photographing the afterglow on the marsh and ended up getting locked inside the preserve for over two hours. When the cops came to try to get me out, neither of them even knew that the place existed. It took over 45 minutes of calls to dispatch, and finally, a visit to a fairly surly water plant attendant, to figure out the combination to the gate lock.
