It's 21 degrees outside the museum right now, so we're taking a mental vacation back to summer grilling season with this BBQ shirt from around 1965. After World War II, many newly affluent Americans flocked to "the tropics," whether that meant the Caribbean or California. Vacationers developed a taste for casual living and distinctive local foods and drink, re-creating them on the patio back home.
They're retro now, but, back then, BBQ-ing accessories were new possessions indicative of a certain lifestyle. This shirt's design included watermelon, pickles, skewers of meat (shish kebabs), grill racks with steaks and hot dogs, spatulas, flippers, even corn on the cob.
