‘Hearths of Resistance’, the Cambodian Year of 2014 in review on the Magnum weblog... CAMBODIA. Phnom Penh.3/01/2014: Striking worker arrested and beaten up by armed forces during a brutal crackdown at Veng Sreng road. At least 5 people were killed by gunfire during the crackdown. The July 2013 legislative elections in Cambodia, which saw a major shift of votes in favour of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), were followed by a political deadlock, the CNRP refusing to take its seats at the National Assembly unless significant reforms for the next elections were agreed upon by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). All through the second half of 2013, the opposition party and the unions of the 600 000 garment factory workers staged incessant and ever bigger demonstrations in the streets of the capital. Prime Minister and strongman Hun Sen, in power for the last three decades, feeling the pressure of the street, ordered a military crackdown on the workers in January 2014, putting an end to large scale manifestations. During the whole of 2014, citizens, workers, activists (mostly related to land issues) nevertheless managed to voice their discontent by staging protest on an almost daily basis. From 2013 until this day, @vinkjohn has been documenting these demonstrations, these ‘Hearths of Resistance’.
