Day 19 #LetsGETFlexyIn2015 is Shalabhasana, Locust Pose. This pose is a therapeutic backbend that sets up the strength and alignment for deeper backbends. Res the iliac crests into the ground, lift the thighs and keep them engaged and straight. Don’t bend the knees to lift the feet higher. Engage the back muscles while lifting the sternum. Press the hands into the ground and lift the chest but keep the lower ribs on the ground. Think about creating length not shortening. This pose is about endurance and alignment not going as deep as possible. If you set it up well Shalabhasana easily becomes more advanced backbends like Viparita Shalabhasana.
