I fall in love for Matera as soon I've arrived here on assignment for Nat Geo Traveler for a story named "Italy forgot". Matera, the oldest continuous human settlement on planet. Inhabited since Paleolithic, till 1956, mostly of the population used to live in caves. Arranged as home, without running water, toilette, leaving in symbiosis with animals as donkeys',chickens, sheep's, etc. 1956, the President of Italy mentioned Matera as the "shame of the country". Since then, new houses were built where people moved abandoning the "Sassi" (that's the local name, it means stones because everything is made by stones here) which became an empty space. Decades later, after the people accepted and realized how important are the Sassi in their history, Matera became UNESCO World Heritage site and the caves are converted in exclusive hotels, b&b, restaurants, studios, etc. Now, Matera has a new target. Recently nominated European Capital of Culture because it was able to recycle itself keeping memories of the past as re-using every single detail of the past "shame".Photograph @massimobassanoNational Geographic photographer#italyforgot #Matera #sassi @ナショナルジオグラフィック #natgeophotos #ngexpeditions
