The long-troubled Salton Sea is in the news again. As farmers let their fields go fallow in order to sell water to nearby towns, there is now limited agricultural runoff feeding into the sea. This decrease in the water supply is exacerbated by the current extreme drought conditions in California, and the Salton Sea is shrinking, leading to more serious concerns about its increasing salinity.
The number of tilapia (and other fish) in the Salton Sea has significantly decreased due in part to oxygen-depleted waters. Massive fish die-offs struck years ago with an estimate of 7 million fish dying on a single hot day. Lesser die-offs continue to occur every year.
