My mom and her sister are twins and have always had a special connection, which they passed on to their children. My cousins, sisters, and I shared a unique bond, growing up together and even living right next door to each other. My cousins Lance, Joel, and Michael were like my brothers. The three of them protected me and promised to stand up for me against bullies, if I ever needed. ---------------------------------------------------
On this date 17 years ago, my cousin Joel died as a result of a tragic pole vaulting accident. He was only 16 years old. The entire family, in fact the entire town, was devastated and stunned by the loss of Joel. He was literally the most popular kid in school, and not just because everyone considered him handsome. Joel was an all-star athlete and honor roll student, and he accepted and befriended everyone--even me, his awkward and misunderstood younger cousin. When Joel died, I felt like I'd lost one of my biggest allies and a personal hero.

May is a very emotional month for me, and my family, but I try not to focus on the pain and rather celebrate my lost loved ones by keeping their memory and spirit alive. ---------------------------------------------------
Life is fragile--tell your partner, your friends, your family that you care for them whenever possible because you never know when it might be your last opportunity. We must never take life or those we love for granted.
